An Indonesian fisherman named Sugianto received an award from South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.

The award was presented at a New Year's Eve 2026 event on Friday (January 2, 2026) at the Blue Palace in Seoul, South Korea.

In addition to Sugianto, President Lee also honored 10 other individuals for their contributions in their respective fields.

As reported by the Korea JoongAng Daily, Sugianto was awarded the award after saving seven elderly people during a forest fire in Yeongdeok, North Gyeongsang Province, in March 2025.

Previously, Sugianto and two other Indonesian citizens, Dipiyo and Vicky Septa Eka Saputra, received long-term resident status for their services in rescuing South Korean residents during a forest fire in North Gyeongsang Province.

"We have decided to grant special contributor resident status to three Indonesian citizens who assisted in the evacuation of elderly residents during the forest fire," said Lee Han-kyung, Deputy Director of the South Korean Disaster and Safety Headquarters.

For your information, long-term resident status can be granted by the Minister of Justice to individuals recognized for making special contributions to Korea or serving the public interest.

The South Korean government expressed its deepest appreciation to Sugianto, Dipiyo, and Vicky for prioritizing the safety of the people of North Gyeongsang above their own.

"We express our deepest gratitude to those who saved the lives of their neighbors without regard for their own safety," said Lee Han-kyung.
